On this tour you are based in Tromso, a charming town in northern Norway above the Arctic Circle. Each day, enjoy wonderful winter activities, including an exhilarating dog sled safari, hunt for the Northern Lights, a magical trip on a reindeer drawn sleigh and Sami cultural experience, a harbour cruise in search of the Northern Lights, a fun snowshoe walk through the forest and more. At night, return to your cosy hotel room to relax and enjoy the restaurants and cafes of the town. Tromso is renowned for being one of the best places on the planet to observe the amazing Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, as it is situated right in the middle of the Northern Lights zone. Despite of being so far north, Tromso enjoys a moderate climate, with the average temperature in January being -4.

Itinerary

Day 1 Tromso Arrival

On arrival at Tromso Airport, transfer to your hotel. This university town has a lively atmosphere and friendly locals. Perhaps visit the Arctic Cathedral for it's daring architecture, the Polaria Aquarium (don't miss the Northern Lights & Spitsbergen Arctic Wilderness films), the Polar Museum to learn about the role Tromso has played in Arctic exploration, and the MS Polstjerna, a well preserved sailing vessel from 1949.

Perhaps take the cable car up to Mount Storsteinen and enjoy the fantastic panoramic view of Tromso and its surroundings, visit one of the several excellent art museums, or sample some local beer at Mack Brewery, the world's northernmost brewery with guided tours that take you through 130 years of beer brewing history.

Day 2 Husky Safari and Northern Lights Hunt

Today transfer to the husky farm, and here meet the friendly huskies, and get ready for a real adventure! After a safety briefing we head out into the amazing arctic coastal landscape, with fantastic views over Tromso, surrounded by white covered mountains and long fjords. Choose between driving your own sled (with 2 persons per sled and the chance to swap drivers half way through) or sit back and let your "musher" do all the hard work for you, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride (with 2 passengers per sled). There's a good chance of spotting wildlife on the way through the snow covered landscapes, as you travel behind your four legged, furry friends. After the exciting dog-sled ride, return to the ranch to meet the puppies and other dogs and enjoy hot drinks and snacks, served around an open fire in an traditional and snug Sami tent. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Tonight enjoy a hunt for the fabled Northern Lights, travelling out of town and far away from any light pollution. Your hosts will help you with taking photographs and will tell you all about the facts and legends of the Aurora.

Day 3 Reindeer Sled Ride & Sami Culture Experience

Reindeer-sledding is the oldest form of transport in the north and an ancient part of Sami culture. You will drive in pairs, with one sled for each reindeer. This cultural adventure includes lasso-throwing, just the way the Sami people still catch their reindeers today, and a fascinating explanation of Sami culture and history. A traditional light meal is included.

Day 4 Day at Leisure

Day at leisure in Tromso or time for optional excursions: morning Snowmobile Safari at wilderness camp or an evening visit to wilderness camp.

Day 5 Snowshoe Walk & Evening Northern Lights Cruise

This morning enjoy a guided snowshoe walk through the scenic birch and spruce forest. On arrival, your guide will teach you how to use the snowshoes, and we then set out on a gentle and fun walk, with stops to rest and take photos. Along the way you will gain a deeper insight into the nature and culture of Northern Norway. You might even get a glimpse of local wildlife such as reindeer, moose and different kinds of birds. Afternoon at leisure to relax. In the evening, make your own way down to the harbour for your Northern Lights Dinner Cruise. The sea is one of the best spots for Aurora hunting! Aboard the warm, comfortable boat with a heated lounge, you will also get a great view of Tromso itself. A dinner of traditional Norwegian fish soup is included.
