Short self drive break in the Faroe Islands
Gjogv, Faroe Islands © Visit Faroe Islands

This short but comprehensive self drive circle tour takes you from the capital Tórshavn to the bird island of Mykines, Suðuroy Island and the Northern Islands. Enjoy the fantastic views and investigate the local culture in your own way!

Itinerary

Day 1 Copenhagen - Vágar, Faroe Islands

Make your own way to Copenhagen airport for your flight to the Faroe Islands. On arrival at Vágar Airport, pick up your hire car and enjoy the rest of the day on Vágar island. We recommend a visit to the small village of Gásadalur, to walk along the marked path and enjoy the impressive views of Tindhólm. Also don't miss the attractive waterfall that runs down into the sea. Overnight on Vágar.

Day 2 Vágar - Torshavn: Optional Mykines visit

Today perhaps take an optional day trip to the bird island of Mykines - available daily. Drive to the harbour in Sørvágur and park your car, then take the ferry across to the island (return ferry ticket included) - an impressive sailing trip alongside the majestic sea cliffs. On the island you will see charming puffins with their colourful red beaks and striking gannets that only breed on Mykines. Cross a footbridge over the Atlantic Ocean to reach the holm and lighthouse. Once back in the village visit one of the local cafés. On your return to Sørvágur, drive on to Tórshavn for overnight.

Day 3 Tórshavn - Suðuroy

Take the ferry from Tórshavn to the island of Suðuroy. The nature on Suðuroy varies from that further north and is particularly well suited to hiking. We recommend visiting the lighthouse at Akraberg on the southernmost tip of the island, and also Beinisvørð, to enjoy the magnificent panorama that unfolds when you get to the top. The village of Famjin, situated in beautiful and dramatic surroundings, is also well worth a visit, and in Tvøroyri you can visit some of the historic buildings used by the Danish Royal Monopoly Store, and have a coffee in the cosy café and bar Pubbin, situated down on the harbour. Or perhaps take an optional guided sightseeing excursion on Suðuroy with driver/guide. Overnight on Suðuroy.

Day 4 Suðuroy - Tórshavn

Return to Tórshavn by ferry, then time to explore on your own. Perhaps take a walk through the old town, Tinganes and Reyn. Soak up the atmosphere of the small houses with their white window frames and turf roofs. The old town is unique, not only in the Faroes but in the entire world. Or join an optional guided city walk or guided bicycle tour in Tórshavn. There are also plenty of restuarants and cafés, and charming boutiques and galleries in Tórshavn. We recommend you also visit Kirkjubøur, which is the historical and cultural centre of the country. Overnight in Tórshavn.

Day 5 Tórshavn - Northern Islands

Drive from Tórshavn across Streymoy Island, passing the old whaling station Við Áir, and over the bridge to the island of Eysturoy. Continue towards the village of Eiði as you take the panoramic route to Gjógv. See the impressive rock formations called Risin and Kellingin (the Giant and the Witch) and the highest mountain, Slættaratindur at 882m. Explore the village of Gjógv, famous for its natural harbour. Drive from Leirvík through the subsea tunnel to Klaksvík. The tunnel is decorated with ‘light' art by the well-known Faroese artist, Tróndur Patursson. When you arrive in Klaksvík, we suggest a visit to the elegant Christian's Church and the exhibition in the church cellar. It is easy to explore the other Northern Isles from Klaksvík, each with its own dramatic landscape. Overnight on the Northern Isles.

Day 6 Faroe Islands - Copenhagen

Depending on your flight departure time you might like to add on an optional two hour boat trip to the Vestmanna sea cliffs where you sail into and through several sea caves and grottoes, a fabulous experience. Take time to also visit the unique Saga Museum which describes the Faroese history from the Viking Ages. Drive back to the airport and return your rental car, before your flight back to Copenhagen. Your tour arrangements end upon your arrival at Copenhagen airport.
