Tromso is known as the Gateway to the Arctic. Situated in the heart of the Northern Lights zone, it is a great place to experience this mysterious phenomenon, while you are surrounded by weathered islands, breathtaking fjords and glaciers, and the majestic Lyngen Alps.

Itinerary

Day 1 Tromso Arrival: Northern Lights Hunt by Bus

Arrival at Tromso Airport, and transfer by shuttle bus to the city for 4 nights accommodation at Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora or similar in Tromso. Remainder of day at leisure. Evening Northern Lights Hunt with Norwegian Charm by bus. Your guide will find the best area for Aurora searching, based on the weather conditions. Hear about the folklore, myths and scientific facts that are associated with this phenomenon. Your guide will assist you with camera settings to take the best possible pictures. Enjoy warm drinks and snacks before returning to your hotel. 

Day 2 Reindeer and Sami Culture

Start your Sami experience today by hand-feeding a herd of 300 reindeer before entering the gamme (Sami hut) for a traditional hot meal cooked over the fire. Finish the day by gathering around the fire to enjoy joiking (traditional Sami songs), Sami history and stories. Remainder of the day at leisure. 2nd overnight at Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora or similar in Tromso.

Day 3 Full Day Husky Safari and Aurora Hunt at Camp Tamok

Today an exciting full day excursion awaits. Depart this morning by bus via scenic fjord and mountain landscape views to the beautiful Tamok Valley, located approx. 90mins drive from Tromso. Upon arrival get kitted out in warm winter clothing and enjoy a guided Husky Safari into the wilderness. You will be driven by professional mushers through the beautiful Vass Valley. After the ride, enjoy a traditional soup lunch. Between your morning and evening activity you will spend approximately 4 hours at Camp Tamok. Enjoy a hot drink by the campfire inside the lavvu and explore the camp area in the crisp cold air. The quiet environment in the camp is relaxing and silent. Try out the snow slope and snowshoes, visit the reindeer and huskies. Grill traditional Norwegian sausages at the campfire with your guide, before you head out to Hunt for the Northern Lights. The untouched wilderness surrounded by darkness is far removed from the bright city lights and situated in a different climate zone that offers more stable weather and the likeliness of a clear sky. There will be an information session about the Aurora Borealis and how to photograph it. Depending on the weather conditions, you will visit different locations around the camp on foot to search for the elusive Northern Lights. A hot meal will be served around an open fire in a reindeer herder’s tent. Return to Tromso by bus, arriving back at your hotel around midnight. 3rd overnight at Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora or similar in Tromso.

Day 4 Polaria, optional Fjellheisen Cable Car

Today at leisure to visit Polaria on your own, entrance ticket included. Housed in a very distinctive building that represents ice floes, Polaria is an unique Arctic discovery centre. The museum offers many interesting exhibits, a panoramic cinema and an Arctic aquarium, its main attraction is the bearded seals. Optional Fjellheisen Cable Car return ticket. The cable car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen in just 4 minutes. From the viewing platform at the upper station, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Tromso and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. 4th overnight at Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora or similar in Tromso.

Day 5 Tromso Departure

Breakfast at the hotel, transfer by shuttle bus from the city centre to Tromso Airport. End of arrangements.
