Walrus, Spitsbergen © Kirsti Ikonen

Nordenskiöld Lodge, the world's northernmost accommodation cabin, is comfortable and cosy accommodation hidden in the glacier moraine of the Nordenskiöld glacier. Reach this remote base on an exciting RIB safari and whilst there, enjoy guided hiking in the nearby area and a fantastic, full day guided glacier hike. The tour also includes 2 nights in Longyearbyen.

Itinerary

Day 1 Longyearbyen Arrival

On arrival in Longyearbyen shuttle bus transfer to your hotel accommodation. Time to explore the town - perhaps visit the Svalbard Museum, the North Pole Expedition Museum and the Svalbard Kirke, or browse the shops for a unique souvenir. Overnight in Longyearbyen at Basecamp Hotel, a unique and atmospheric hotel decorated in authentic trapper´s style. Tonight we suggest you pack a small, waterproof bag with your essentials for the next 2 days - your other bags can be stored at Basecamp Hotel.

Day 2 Longyearbyen - Nordenskiöld

This morning meet your guide at 08:00hrs at your hotel then head to the harbour to board the Isfjord Ekspressen enclosed boat. Travel over the Isfjorden all the way to the Billefjorden and Adolfbukta. There is plenty of wildlife around the fjords at this time of the year, such as arctic birds, walruses, belugas and sometimes polar bears. On arrival at the Nordenskiöld cabin, enjoy an outdoor lunch followed by a guided walk.

Overnight at Nordenskiöld Lodge, nestled in the glacier moraine by the foot of the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier, far off the beaten path in the remote wilderness of Spitsbergen. Listen to the glacier as it speaks with cracking sounds, loud roars, whispers and pieces of ice breaking off the glacier front. Please note the Lodge has no running water or electricity - wood is used to heat the cabin and sauna and there are five twin rooms each with two beds, with fantastic Arctic views, an indoor composting toilet, and a traditional wood sauna. Each evening, return to the cabin for a delicious dinner and warm sauna.

Day 3 Nordenskiöld: Guided Glacier Climb

After breakfast your guide will talk to you about equipment and safety on the glacier before heading to Nordenskiöld glacier, which lies just a stone's throw away from the cabin. We spend the whole day on the blue glacier, climbing up and down on the ice and even crossing some of the crevasses along the way. Enjoy an expedition lunch with beautiful views over Billefjorden and learn more about the blue ice.
