Snowfalls occur, but they are short-lived; the Gulf Stream encircles the islands and tempers the climate, so the harbours never freeze and winter temperatures are moderate. At night, you only have to step outside to seek the fabled Northern Lights!
Itinerary
Day 1 Monday Copenhagen - Faroe Islands
Make your own way to Copenhagen for your flight to the Faroe Islands. On arrival at Vágar airport, pick up your rental car and start exploring the island of Vágar - we suggest a visit to the small villages of Gásadalur and Bøur. From here you can enjoy the impressive view over Tindhólm. Leave Vágar via the sub-sea tunnel to Streymoy, and drive towards the bridge the only bridge over the Atlantic. As you arrive on Eysturoy you can make a photo stop by the bridge. Continue to your accommodation on Eysturoy, where you will spend the next 2 nights.
Day 2 Tuesday Eysturoy - Klaksvik - Eysturoy
We suggest a visit to the Northern Islands today. From the village of Leirvík drive through the sub-sea tunnel to the town of Klaksvík. The tunnel is decorated with "light art" by the well-known Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. From Klaksvík, you can take a brisk walk to the top of Klakkur, where you have an excellent view of Kunoyarnes, Haraldsund and the town of Klaksvík. If you have time, it is well worth the drive to Kunoy village, on the island of Kunoy, for another stunning view, this time of nearby Kalsoy island.
On the way back to your accommodation visit Fuglafjørður village. The harbour is a busy place where a steady traffic of local and boats gives life and colour. Admire the rusty red sculptures and visit the Arts and Crafts centre, Ribarhús and Piddasahandil, located in an old historic building (open from 15:00-17:30hrs). 2nd night on Eysturoy.
Day 3 Wednesday Eysturoy - Tórshavn
From Eysturoy visit the small villages of Tjørnuvík and Saksun. Tjørnuvík is surrounded by steep mountains and offers a fantastic view to the impressive rock formations, the Giant and the Witch. Saksun is a picturesque village where the bay used to be a protected natural harbour. Today the entrance to the bay is blocked by sand but at low tide you can walk far out along the sand to the ocean.
On arrival in Tórshavn check-in at your accommodation, then time to explore on your own. You can walk through the old parts of town, Tinganes and Reyn with their narrow alleys and charming houses with grass roofs. Or perhaps join an optional guided city walk. You can relax in one of the cosy cafés, down by the harbour with many colourful boats. At the end of the harbour is Østrom where you can see and buy contemporary Faroese art and fine crafts, and on the main street you can visit the pleasant old bookstore and tourist office. 2 nights in Torshavn.
Day 4 Thursday Tórshavn: Day at Leisure
Day at leisure. We recommend a visit to the village of Kirkjubøur which is the Faroe Islands’ historical and cultural center. The picturesque old farm is home to a family who for 17 generations have run the farmstead and ecclesiastic site. See the unfinished Magnus Cathedral and the small medieval church of St. Olav. In Tórshavn perhaps visit the art museum - the permanent collection has a wide variety of Faroese art, and shows how nature and the landscape have been the dominant motifs throughout Faroese art history. From there it is not far to the Nordic House, the most important cultural institution in the Faroe Islands, helping to preserve and promote Nordic and Faroese culture. If you have time visit also the National Museum which contains discoveries from the ancient Vikings, and the famous Kirkjubø chairs that were part of the furnishings of the Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubøur. 2nd night in Tórshavn.
Day 5 Friday Tórshavn - Copenhagen
Return your rental car at the airport and take the flight to Copenhagen. Your tour arrangements end upon your arrival at Copenhagen Airport.
